i had to pause the film (“John Rabe”) during its depiction of a very disturbing scene. it was of Rabe’s driver’s head being chopped off, machete-style, and placed alongside a row of other heads. My heart ached and i felt a need to create a “pained” (and painted) memorial of/for them and all who have and are continually suffering and dying from wars and other horrors. My Eye sees and I see, sometimes what feels like too much.
We laud the human race but it’s the only species of animal that has destroyed so much and killed so many. Yearly humans kill 70 billion animals for so-called food. Those who consume this food die from heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, kidney and liver diseases, etc – the number totaling more than that of people killed in all the wars, car accidents and “natural” disasters put together. This unnatural consumption is also causing our planet to be headed towards its sixth mass extinction.
(please don’t let the above “spoiler” deter you from seeing “John Rabe.” this beautiful, powerful, illuminating (and yes, intense) drama.
